With a bit of effort, you can keep your smart digital lock working well and last for years. So, how should do you maintain your digital lock? Well, we've got 10 quick and easy tips for you!
#1. Make sure that the digital lock is installed correctly

A digital lock will only last if it is installed correctly in the first place. Make sure that the digital lock can close properly, with no external fixtures (such as door gates) that add pressure or friction on the lock’s bolt or latch once it is closed. The external gate and door should also be aligned properly once closed.
#2. Clean the digital lock regularly with the right cloth

Use a clean microfiber cloth (with either a cleaning solution or disinfectant) to clean the digital lock since they are the most effective in removing dust, dirt, grime, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens from surfaces due to the structure of microfibers, which is much finer than our hair.
#3. Use the right cleaning solution

The mixture of detergent with plenty of water is the most effective in removing most of the dust, dirt and grime. Dampen a microfibre cloth with soapy water and wipe down the device surface thoroughly. Then dry the digital lock surface with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. By removing the dust, dirt and grime from the digital lock surface, the digital lock will function optimally since it is able to detect fingerprints, pin code or RFID card more quickly.
#4. Ensure that only the right mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water is used to disinfect the digital lock

The digital lock needs to be disinfected regularly since it is one of the most frequent touchpoint. Hence, the mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water functions as an all-purpose digital lock disinfectant which can kill bacteria and virus while removing dust, dirt and built-up grease. However, never spray the alcohol solution directly on the digital lock and only use a small appropriate amount on the microfiber to clean the surface. Since certain glass screens have special coatings which will dissolve upon contact with isopropyl alcohol, so check with the manufacturer first if you are unsure.
#5. Remember to keep the insides of the battery compartment clean as well

Remove the batteries from the battery compartment and clean the insides and the contact points of the batteries thoroughly. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any debris or dust that’s become trapped in between the hard-to-reach areas.
#6. Use the right batteries

Use reputable batteries instead of the cheap $1 batteries that are sold at the ABC budget stores. This is because they do not last and will leak sooner. Brands such as Energizer alkaline batteries will last longer. High-voltage batteries (e.g., lithium-ion batteries) may not be suitable for the digital locks since they might overload and damage the digital lock motherboard. Do check with the manufacturer first if you are unsure.
#7. Replace the batteries regularly

All batteries tend to leak over time and using corroded batteries will significantly reduce the lifespan of your digital lock. When the alkaline batteries leak, white flaky substance can be found near the battery contacts and damage the internal digital lock. To clean battery corrosion like this, use gloves and a cleaning cloth to remove the crystalline white residue from the battery itself and the battery compartment.
#8. Remove the batteries when not in use

If you plan to be away for an extended period for a holiday, remove the batteries in case they leak and damage the digital lock. Once the digital lock is damaged, you cannot gain access to your abode and will need to use the key to the digital lock to do so.
#9. Use the right digital door lock lubricant

The movable parts of the digital door lock should be lubricated regularly so that they can function smoothly. According to the experienced locksmiths, the best lock lubricant is a Teflon-based lubricant. Graphite and oil based lubricants tend to gunk up over time and collect debris.
#10. Treat the digital lock with upmost care

Do not slam the digital door lock when closing the door, since the repeated violent impact will damage the mechanical parts and the delicate motherboards over time. You can consider installing the door with a soft door closer to prevent the door from slamming.
