These 10 Cosy Alcoves are Perfect for Nesting at Home
- Apr 2, 2024
No longer just the purview of fowls, ‘nesting’ now refers to relaxing in our homes. It's about settling and feeling comfortable and secure. But where to nest? How do you create a space that’s nest-worthy? The key is to create a cosy alcove or corner. Below are some of our favourite cosy alcoves found in Singapore homes, from sunny nooks to daybeds for daydreaming. So grab a throw blanket and let's get cosy.
1. Curl up in curves
Why waste that space below the window when you can eke out some seating and storage? Notice how the seat has a slight curve for extra comfort? I also love how a part of it is slightly raised to function as a table of sorts.

2. Casual dining
Located behind the living room, this cosy alcove here is a raised platform that conceals a table! Throw in a couple of floor cushions to make yourself more comfortable or turn it into a casual dining spot by tucking your legs underneath.

3. For daydreaming
In this HDB flat, a daybed was constructed to double up on storage space and provide a cosy corner for lounging in the bedroom. It frames the window—with a lovely asymmetrical curve—where the seat is raised just high enough so that you can take in the view from the window while seated.

4. Maximising wardrobe and comfort
To maximise closet space, the wardrobe was built to protrude out, but this in turn created a gap between the built-in carpentry and the window, which the designer cleverly resolved by building the cosiest of alcoves with the most gorgeous cityscape views. A curved design was chosen to better connect the two structures.

5. Reading corner
Thanks to all that extra space near the entrance of this DBSS, the designers decided to turning this into a reading platform for the family of bookworms. The shoe cabinet/settee at one end helps to enclose the area for more privacy, while a tall bookshelf on the other end displays their reads and allows little ones to reach out for their favourite books themselves.

6. Time for tea
Squirrelled away behind shoji-like screens, this cosy alcove is situated in a Japanese townhouse themed BTO. It features a tatami-clad platform that’s perfect for an impromptu traditional tea ceremony.

7. Curtain call
How do you make a cosy alcove even cosier? Turn it into a curtain hideaway! The soft furnishing isn’t just a functional for your room, it’s also great for adding a sprinkle of hygge all while also concealing any mess when necessary. How multifunctional is that?

8. Window nook
So we’ve seen a lot of the cosy alcoves here designed next to the window, which should explain how important daylight and a sense of space is to evoke feelings of comfort and warmth. This one’s no different! If your built-in reading nook’s feeling a bit rigid, floor recliners are always a nice addition.

9. A cosy hideaway
Rather than have the full-height storage span across the entire wall, a little corner nook was created instead. A small window cut-out was also woven in, connecting this space with the adjacent kitchen and allowing light to come through.

10. Foyer's happy place
The extra corridor space was converted into a foyer, complete with a greenery-filled cosy corner featuring a wall-mounted table and a gorgeous view to boot. Coffee in the mornings will never be the same!
