The Singapore standard code of practice for the lighting of workplaces SS 531, states that a normal workstation requires 500 Lux* to carry out activities such as writing, reading and data processing. Hence, based on the luminance of 500 Lux, you can derive on the number of lighting fixtures required for a functional home office based on the following formula: Number of lighting fixtures = (Lux level*area in metre sq)/Lumens per fixture. Tip: Lux* (illuminance) is the amount of light that is cast on a surface. This can be thought of as light intensity within a specific area. Lumens** is the total output of visible light from a light source. Typically, the more lumens a light fixture provides, the brighter it is.
