My Journey In Choosing The Best Home Broadband Plan

When it comes to choosing an Internet Service Provider (ISP), many of us tend to choose convenience over personal compatibility. When I ask for recommendations from friends or family over which ISP to choose, the answer is usually this: use the same service provider you're using for your mobile or cable television. But is this really the best decision?

Market Research

Many of us use the Internet for standard functions such as web browsing, gaming, and video streaming. Based on my own research, there are 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gbps or even 2 Gbps home broadband packages in Singapore. But 1 Gbps is by far the most common. I decided to put together the 1 Gbps home broadband packages that I found to do a proper comparison:

My Choice

Since my home is a new HDB flat, and I'm not really into cable TV, I'm not tied down to any existing telco plan. So this leaves me to choose whichever package is best for me! The WhizComms 1 Gbps package seems to be the best fit, as it's the cheapest deal with the standard contractual commitment. BUT! Besides looking at the price, it always pays to see what else is there — cannot just settle!

Are They Trustworthy?

Although WhizComms is relatively new in the market, but I heard that they are using the infrastructure from one of the big boys — Singtel, I am quite confident about this new challenger.

But, why so cheap?

I found that they only operate through a digital platform (so there are no physical stores). So everything — including subscribing for their broadband packages — has to be done ourselves through their website. This is great, because this means I can take my own sweet time to choose the package I want (with no pressure from service staff), and decide whichever add-ons I need with my basic broadband package. Since WhizComms saves on retail and manpower cost by operating solely online, it allows them to offer the best bargain to their subscribers which just means additional savings for me! Yay!

Good Service and The Extra Mile

After signing up for the 1 Gbps package (12 months incl. Wireless Router), which was a breeze by the way, the team contacted me to arrange for my installation and complimentary Wi-Fi audit, which came with my package since I got mine with a router. On the installation day, one of their professional field engineers, Mr Oliver, came down to my flat to locate and optimise the best position to place my own wireless router for the best coverage. Thanks to his wonderful suggestion, I can now access the Wi-Fi in almost every corner of my home. As someone who lives and breathes the Internet (even at home), I am super relief by this. TIP: Understanding Internet Speed

Internet speed is the combination of bandwidth and latency. To simplify it, bandwidth is width of a pipe, and latency is how fast the data travels through the pipe. (Note that all the speeds stated in the broadband packages below are for wired connections only. If you connect wirelessly, the speed will very much depend on your router.)
