FEATURED DESIGNER: Rezt & Relax

  • Aug 31, 2017

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this mini-series, we shine the spotlight on three interior design firms. What do they have in common? A long and well established history in the local interior design scene and an incredible portfolio of works. Today, we centre our attention on Rezt & Relax, an interior design studio that has been around for over 17 years. The firm was started by a pair of longtime friends who first met when they were working together at a renovation company. Wilson Teh and John Foo eventually decided to start out on their own, basing their mission on creating spaces that would be havens for resting and relaxing. It has since grown into a 70-strong team and is one of the few design companies that offer a lifetime warranty on their carpentry work. We speak to Wilson to find out more about the firm.

1. How would you describe your firm’s designs?

We have such a huge group of creative people and all have varying design philosophies. We don't really have a signature style per se, but we always emphasise that our designs must fit the homeowner's lifestyle. A design, no matter how impressive and uniquely beautiful, would prove futile if it is not attuned to the living habits of its occupants. So we try to get to know the homeowner and what their living situation is really like. It is only then that we can come up with a design that is both practical and aesthetically appealing.

2. You’ve been in the business for quite a while now. How are homeowners today different from in the past?

They are more sophisticated than ever before, being Internet savvy and all. With that comes visual attraction as the basis for their first contact and initial interest. What this means is that homeowners today will have to like what they see on your website or online platforms first and foremost first. Second is also what they read. Having good reviews definitely help homeowners determine which firm they would like an initial discussion with. But at the end of the day, it is the designer that they’ve met that will ultimately influence their decision to sign the contract. So it's important that a designer connects with the homeowners on a personal level too.

3. What are some things homeowners should be aware of before they sign up for a renovation package?

The homeowner must make sure that the design firm they’re thinking of engaging with is at the very least HDB-certified. It will be a huge plus if the firm is CaseTrust-accredited as well. Finally, the homeowner should not sign blindly. Make sure to read and understand everything that is written on the contract. Everything that they’ve discussed must be in black and white.   View more of their portfolio here.
